What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical Peel causes intentional damage to the epidermis and/or dermis.  The goal is to stimulate new tissue to improve skin texture and tone.

Chemical Peels date back to the days of Cleopatra.  She used sour milk to improve the appearance of her skin.  The process reveals a smoother and more radiant complexion.

Is it going to burn me???

Not at all! Many hear the word chemical or acid and automatically get worried.  Chemical Peels can feel tingly and the sensation has been likened to ‘prickly heat’. Initially the treatment can feel hot but it’s governed by your skins individual reaction and how it feels.

When will I get my glow???

Chemical peels encourage exfoliation by sloughing off dead skin cells, forcing the body to quickly replenish them with new cells. When peels are performed regularly, the skin gets used to this process and begins to rejuvenate itself like younger skin. To be sure that the body doesn’t react as it would to trauma, which could lead to pigment changes, exfoliation must be introduced gradually giving the skin time to adjust.

Healthy, radiant skin doesn’t happen overnight, and some treatments take time to show results. A single chemical peel can provide the immediate effect of bright, smooth and radiant skin; however, more significant results in treating textural issues, discolouration, fine lines and inflamed acne could take longer. Therefore, usually a series of scheduled treatments is recommended.

Which Acid Should I Choose?…

Common peeling ingredients include alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) and retinol.  AHAs include glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid and mandelic acid.  Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid.  The strength of a chemical peel is determined by the type of ingredients used, the concentration and the pH formula.

As each peel has different ingredients, they each target different conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation or the signs of ageing.

Lactic Acid

Naturally found in milk but biosynthesised for cosmetic formulations, lactic acid has a larger molecular weight than other AHAs, which reduces inflammation.

Salicylic Acid

Related to aspirin, salicylic acid is an exfoliant with anti-inflammatory properties.  It is oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate into the follicles to effectively exfoliate dead skin cells, unplug pores, control acne pimples and smooth skin.

Resorcinol  Acid

Resorcinol has retexturing properties due to its keratolytic action.  Resorcinol also coagulates proteins in the skin, which may lead to frosting when used in a chemical peel.

Retinoids

Vitamin A derivatives that stimulate collagen, increase cell turnover and normalise keratinisation, creating smoother and more even-toned skin.  Retinoids also inhibit melanin transfer from melanocytes to skin cells and enhance the penetration of other pigment-blocking products.  Retinoids reduce fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.  In addition, retinoids target acne-prone skin by unclogging pores.  There are more than 700 published studies on anti-ageing and retinoids. Retinoids are clinically proven to reverse the signs of ageing.
